Kalo Kini Swimwear

image2Swimwear was the first thing I focused on when looking for a Hawaii brand to promote.  I’m always in the water swimming, snorkeling, bodyboarding and paddle boarding. I’ve been on the search for bikinis that stayed on while I’m diving in waves, paddling out and getting pounded in the shore break .  Finding a bikini top that fits me perfectly was also a struggle because of my not so standard bust size.  image4

When starting my search I was blown away by finding so many small Hawaii businesses specializing in swimwear.  I’ve always bought brands like Roxy, Billabong and Hurley and never knew handmade bikinis in Hawaii existed.

After a few weeks of looking through the businesses that had trendy bikinis that fit my lifestyle I decided to buy my first Kalo Kini.  Once I got my first top from them I was hooked. It fit perfectly, stayed on strong and of course, eye catching with it’s flattering cuts and mixed colors.

image3The person responsible for creating this brand, Mariah Tavares is the owner, designer, seamstress, marketing and shipping queen.  Not only has she started her own swimwear line but this amazing woman is mother to a cute teenie-wahine and has another job outside of Kalo Kini!!!

Mariah was fortunate to grow up in the tropical surroundings of Waipio Valley.  I’m jealous but very thankful that she was raised in this valley surrounded by waterfalls, streams, ocean and lush landscape. Waipio’s such an inspirational and sustainable Hawaiian landmark.IMG_7816IMG_7955

IMG_7694image3Thank you Instagram for allowing small business to showcase their brands, without IG I would’ve never found Kalo Kini! Mahalo Mariah for continuing your striving business and allowing me to showcase your creations.

I highly suggest following @kalokini on Instagram and Twitter to get the latest news on sales, events and new prints or designs coming out.  Once the print is sold out it may not be available again.  Mark your calendars for popup and special events where they have limited and exclusive prints and designs sold.  Happy shopping!

My family and I started collecting shells, glass balls and sea glass since we moved to Lana’i in 1998. It’s always been displayed in vases in our home, until two years ago when I started making my own jewelry.

It takes me hours and sometime days to finish a pair of earrings. The process of finding a matching pair, cleaning them, drilling holes and then putting everything together using wire or chains is not easy. Sometimes I think it’s a great way to get your mind off things as you get into the process but many times it’s a darn pain in the ass and hella frustrating. The most devastating thing that happens to me quite often is cracking a shell after taking months or even years trying to find a matching pair!

Knowing I’m not a patient hole driller I tend to buy jewelry from professionals. I will not take the chance of cracking one of my unique, tiny, frail shells.

SeasTheLove is the name of a jewelry retailer from Lana’i. Sharah Myers is the creator of all the jewelry sold on her website and the reason I started making my own jewelry. All of her shells are hand picked and pre-checked to be sure no live animals are residents of these colorful shells. Her creativity is displayed in each piece, I can only imagine how much time it takes her to complete them. You’ll find an array of dainty, tasteful items at SeasTheLove. If you see something you like that’s not showing in her online shop feel free to contact her she’ll make what you’re looking for as long as she has the supplies!
